The free editions

This is where the two differ most.

CS Browser Free is licensed for personal use only: any commercial, business, government or military use requires Pro. Its free edition is also limited to:

  • 2 S3-compatible accounts;
  • 2 concurrent uploads, downloads or tasks per queue;
  • no copy, move or download of an entire bucket;
  • no applying a storage class or server-side encryption to an entire bucket;
  • no restoring object versions, and no downloading or deleting several versions at once;
  • CloudFront invalidation of a single file or folder, default compression level only.

S3 Explorer Free has no usage restriction and includes every feature. The only limits are 5 saved connection profiles and an occasional reminder; a licence removes both.

Price

For a team of five on Windows, CS Browser Pro costs $49.99 + 4 × $46.99 = $237.95, with one year of updates. A professional using the free edition is outside its licence terms.

The same team on S3 Explorer can stay on the free edition if five profiles each are enough, or buy five lifetime licences at 11.50 € each, updates included.

Platforms

CS Browser is a Windows application. On macOS or Linux, there is no native version.

S3 Explorer runs on Windows, macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Linux (AppImage, .deb, .rpm), on x64 and ARM64. A team with mixed machines uses the same client and the same workflow everywhere.

S3-compatible providers

Both connect to Amazon S3 and to S3-compatible services through a custom endpoint.

S3 Explorer adds 25 presets that fill in the endpoint format, regions and addressing mode: Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, Wasabi, MinIO, Ceph, Google Cloud Storage, DigitalOcean Spaces, OVHcloud, Scaleway, Hetzner, Garage, SeaweedFS and more. See the provider guides.

Where CS Browser goes further

CS Browser has been developed since 2008 and covers more of the AWS-specific management surface. Features it offers that S3 Explorer does not, as of version 0.3.9:

  • bucket lifecycle rules, bucket policies, CORS and static website hosting;
  • CloudFront distribution management and invalidation;
  • a folder sync tool and command-line tools for automation;
  • client-side compression and AES-256 encryption;
  • restore from S3 Glacier and Deep Archive;
  • ACL editing, including in bulk.

If your work is mostly AWS administration from a Windows workstation, these matter.

Where S3 Explorer goes further

  • Cross-platform, with one licence covering several devices.
  • A local index for instant search and navigation in buckets with millions of objects, without re-listing.
  • Provider presets and adaptive compatibility: the client adapts to how each S3-compatible server responds, instead of assuming AWS behaviour.
  • Built-in editors and previews: text, images, video and audio.
  • Per-request metrics with cost estimates.

Which one to choose

  • Windows only, heavy AWS administration (lifecycle, policies, CloudFront, sync scripts): CS Browser Pro.
  • macOS or Linux: S3 Explorer.
  • Professional use without paying for a licence: S3 Explorer Free.
  • Several S3-compatible providers (R2, B2, MinIO, Wasabi…): S3 Explorer.
  • Very large buckets to browse and search: S3 Explorer.
